Origin

An artifact from dNetHack, which in turn got it from the Final Fantasy series.

Kiku-ichimonji (菊一文字), literaly "Chrysanthemum and ichi character". It's a collective name given to the Japanese swords made by the thirteen swordsmiths who were in attendance to the emperor Go-Toba in 1208.

The swordsmiths normally inscribed the character "Ichi" (一,one) as their signature. They further received permission to append the Imperial Chrysanthemum crest (菊, kiku). Thus the weird name for their swords.

In the Final Fantasy series, Kiku-ichimonji is typically one of the more powerful of the Katana weapon class.
