A bag of treasure is a type of tool that appears in EvilHack. It is a magical container that is made of cloth and appears as a bag when unidentified.

Generation

The bag of treasure is extremely rare, and makes up 11000 (0.1%) of all tools that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. A bag of treasure cannot be wished for, will not occur as any material other than cloth, and will not appear on fake "bones" piles accompanying traps that are placed when creating early dungeon levels, but it can be found in an actual bones file. A normally-created bag of treasure is always uncursed and empty.

Croesus has a roughly 12 chance of generating with a bag of treasure.

Description

A bag of treasure can be applied to store items very similarly to a bag of holding, but is more restricted in the types of items it can store: it is only capable of holding gold pieces and gems (both worthless glass and actual valuable gems), but it has a greater impact on the weight of its contents dependent on its beatitude—attempting to place ineligible items will simply fail with no other effect. The bag of treasure auto-identifies if the hero attempts placing "non-treasure" items inside, or if they cause an unidentified bag to explode.

An uncursed bag of treasure reduces the weight of its contents to 14, while a blessed one reduces it to 18, and a cursed bag multiplies their weight by 10: the bag's weight is recalculated each time items are transferred to and/or from it. As with a cursed bag of holding, applying, looting or tipping a cursed bag of treasure has a 113 chance per stack of each item inside disappearing permanently.

Exploding bags

Placing another bag of treasure, a bag of devouring, a bag of holding, a charged bag of tricks, a charged wand of cancellation, or any container that has one of these items inside a bag of treasure will cause that bag of treasure to explode—the same will occur if a bag of treasure is placed inside a bag of holding or bag of devouring. This destroys both the inserted item and the bag itself along with 113 of the latter bag's contents, and scatters the rest through the surrounding area in a process that can destroy fragile items.

Strategy

In terms of specifically holding massive amounts of gold, the bag of treasure surpasses even the Bag of the Hesperides: 250,000 gold pieces can be reduced to 625 aum by an uncursed bag of treasure, compared to roughly 833 aum for the uncursed Bag of the Hesperides, while a blessed bag of treasure reduces it to nearly 312 aum compared to 416 aum for the blessed Bag of the Hesperides. However, the artifact bag is preferable for its inventory management applications outside of specifically gold and gems, and a bag of treasure is generally only worth pairing with it for the most thorough and devoted of pack rats.

History

The bag of treasure is added in EvilHack version 0.9.3 alongside the bag of devouring via commit 417f2c97.
