A bag of devouring is a type of tool that appears in EvilHack. It is a magical container that is made of cloth and appears as a bag when unidentified.
Generation
The bag of devouring is extremely rare, and makes up 1⁄1000 (0.1%) of all tools that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. A bag of devouring cannot be wished for, will not occur as any material other than cloth, and will not appear on fake "bones" piles accompanying traps that are placed when creating early dungeon levels, but it can be found in an actual bones file. A normally-created bag of devouring is always uncursed and empty.
Croesus has a roughly 1⁄2 chance of generating with a bag of devouring.
Description
A bag of devouring can be applied like other bags, but cannot be used to properly store items. Instead, the bag will permanently destroy anything that the hero places inside it, with the exception of normally-indestructible items: the real Amulet of Yendor, the invocation items, the scroll of consecration, the Sword of Annihilation, the Armor of Retribution, the Idol of Moloch in the hands of an Infidel player character, or the corpse of any of the Riders. The bag of devouring auto-identifies if it successfully consumes anything when used (including the hero themselves), and will also auto-identify if it refuses to consume an item or the hero causes the unidentified bag to explode.
A cursed bag of devouring will try to devour part of the hero's open inventory if they apply or loot it, destroying up to three stacks of items that they are carrying each time—the bag will not target any item that it cannot destroy normally or any of the following items:
- other containers
- a heavy iron ball that is chained to the hero
- the iron chain connecting a chained iron ball to the hero
- armor embedded in the hero's skin, e.g. dragon scales from polymorph into a dragon, or armor merged by a Druid's wildshape ability
- The Hand of Vecna bound to the hero's arm
- the quest artifact of the hero's role, if it has been retrieved from their Quest but not presented to their quest leader
Devouring the hero
If no eligible items are available when a cursed bag of devouring would eat any of the hero's inventory, there is a 1⁄3 chance that the bag will devour the hero whole instead and kill them instantly, with an amulet of life saving resurrecting the hero as normal.
Exploding bags
Placing another bag of devouring, a bag of treasure, a bag of holding, a charged bag of tricks, a charged wand of cancellation, or any container that has one of these items inside a bag of devouring will cause that bag of treasure to explode—the same will occur if a bag of devouring is placed inside a bag of holding. This destroys both the inserted item and the bag itself along with 1⁄13 of the latter bag's contents (if applicable), and scatters the rest through the surrounding area in a process that can destroy fragile items.
History
The bag of devouring is added in EvilHack version 0.9.3 alongside the bag of treasure via commit 417f2c97.
