Self-righteous is a weapon property that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. Self-righteous weapons deal increased damage to monsters vulnerable to holy or unholy damage that do not resist both slashing and piercing damage. All the "church" weapons and weapon-tools have this property (church sheaths and bricks do not). The property does not show up in item inspection and cannot be seen directly in any menu.

On a valid target, a self-righteous weapon will increase holy/unholy damage by 2.5x. The church shortsword will instead deal 5x damage starting at 40 insight. Note that this does not affect the base dice rolled nor add any flat damage bonus, so a weapon that doesn't deal any additional holy/unholy will not be affected by this property. For example, a blessed golden church shortsword wielded by a character with at least 40 insight will deal an additional 1d100 holy damage against holy hating monsters, or 1d50 below the insight threshold.

Extra holy/unholy damage dealt by weapons is affected by the following:

  • Blessed or cursed weapons gain 1d4; blessed or cursed golden weapons instead gain 1d20
  • Consecrated/desecrated weapons gain 2d6; holy and unholy weapons instead gain the weapon's base damage again as holy/unholy damage
  • Various artifacts gain bonus holy/unholy damage
  • Khakkharas modify the amount of dice rolled to be 1-3, stacks with other effects

The following types of weapons are self-righteous:
