Weapon-tool

A weapon-tool is a type of tool in NetHack that functions in the same manner as a weapon:[1] a weapon-tool has an accompanying weapon skill, can be enchanted under the same rules as regular weapons, and a cursed weapon-tool will weld to the hand(s) of a hero or monster that wields one.

Description

The following items are considered weapon-tools:

There are weapons and tools that have functional similarities, but are not themselves weapon-tools:

  • The dwarvish mattock has the same weapon skill and functions as a pick-axe, but is actually considered a weapon outright.
  • Axes and battle-axes are weapons, but can be applied similar to other tools in order to chop down doors.
  • A tin opener is a tool that must be wielded, and applying the tool will wield it before prompting for a tin to open; a cursed tin opener will also weld itself to a hero's hand.
  • A wet towel can be used as an improvised weapon, but has special cases concerning this in the code in order to avoid classifying it as a weapon-tool.

Since weapon-tools also count as weapons, hitting a monster with one breaks the weaponless conduct.[2]

Variants

UnNetHack

UnNetHack adds the crystal pick as a weapon-tool.
