A church-pick is a type of weapon-tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a one-handed piercing weapon that uses the pick-axe skill and is made of metal. At skilled and expert it gains the hew, fell, cleave and penetrate armor expert traits. While in this form, the weapon also functions as a digging implement.

When applied, it will transform into a church shortsword, which is a type of one-handed piercing/slashing weapon that uses the shortsword skill and is made of metal. At skilled and expert, it gains the focus fire and create openings expert traits.

Both the church-pick and church shortsword count as self-righteous weapons, dealing 2.5x holy/unholy damage against targets not resistant to slashing and piercing weapons. Above 40 insight the church shortsword instead starts dealing 5x holy/unholy damage.

Both the church-pick and church shortsword deal 20% extra damage to beastly or ritually impure monsters that don't resist both slashing and piercing damage. Starting at 40 insight, this rises to +50%.

The following monsters are affected by the damage increase:

Generation

Church shortswords make up 11000 of randomly generated weapons. Church-picks do not randomly generate

The undead hunter quest home will contain a church shortsword 90% of the time. It is located inside a box in the top-left room of the map, near the forge.

Strategy

Undead hunters who find a church-pick in their quest will find it to be a reliable weapon, especially after it has been properly smithed and culted. The main issue is that it forces characters using a shield to either deal with the inconvenience of having to take it off whenever they wish to use the pick, or abandon their shield altogether. As a bimanual weapon, some precautions should to remedy having the weapon welded to your hands. Due to its prohibitive weight, it is probably best converted to silver or mithril through The Silver Flame, or smithed from the plethora of mithril-coats down in the filler levels.
