Smithing is a skill that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is tied to the smithing hammer item, though it does not directly use it.

The following roles can gain skill in smithing:

Role Skill
Undead Hunter Expert

The following races can gain skill in smithing:

Race Skill
Gnome Skilled
Dwarf Expert

Description

Non-flammable items dipped into a forge while wielding a smithing hammer can be improved, which increases their enchantment, based on current smithing skill:

  • Up to +1 at Basic
  • Up to +3 at Skilled
  • Up to +5 at Expert

Items of less enchantment than the maximum allowed for by your current smithing skill can also be melted back down into ingots.

Strategy

Smithing weapons, weapon-tools and armor trains the skill faster than other items.

Roles and races that can advance their skill up to Skilled may consider training smithing to improve any metallic or non-flammable weapons and armor. Undead Hunters benefit far more from advancing their smithing skill to Expert, as they unlock more skills from advancing their smithing. Although they may already enchant their gear past their smithing skill enchantment limit through the use of columnar crystals, advancing to Expert allows them to more easily enchant their gear to +10 without requiring more of the intermediary twin-columnar crystals.
