A smithing hammer is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a small one-handed blunt weapon. At Skilled and Expert, it gains the Hew and Stunning strike expert traits. Smithing hammers have a default material of iron.

Generation

Smithing hammers do not randomly generate.
A smithing hammer is generated in the Undead Hunter quest home's top left room, on the square containing a forge.
All Undead Hunters start the game with a +0 iron smithing hammer.
Mithril smiths, human smiths and dwarf smiths are generated wielding a smithing hammer.

Description

The smithing hammer, while a viable weapon, can also be applied to smith various items based on the hero's skills and knowledge of items' identified appearance. A hero who does not have access to the smithing skill may only smith a few basic types of items.

Strategy

For Undead Hunters, their starting smithing hammer is an important tool that allows them to improve their armor and weapons. A hero that wishes to advance their weapon's skill to Expert, when they cannot initially do so, has a chance to unlock that skill up to Expert after they use their first twin-columnar crystal. If their starting smithing hammer is lost, they may replace it at their quest, or take one from the dwarf smith located in mine town.

Other roles, which don't start the game with a smithing hammer or any skill with it, may still have uses for one. Smithing hammers are a guaranteed way to obtain some otherwise rare tools like stethoscopes, tinning kits, trephination kits, oil lamps and lock picks, obtainable at Restricted smithing skill (even if uncharged). While only two races are given skill in smithing—gnomish heroes (up to Skilled) and dwarvish heroes (up to Expert)—other races can still advance their skill temporarily by binding Naberius (up to Basic) or Maegera (up to Expert).

For heros that wish to make use of the smithing mechanic, a lighter copy of a smithing hammer does not weigh much and can be stashed in their bag of holding.
