Naberius, mysterious councilor is a spirit that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Naberius must be addressed by a character with at least 14 Int and Wis while they are confused or have drunk at least one potion of booze per experience level.

To keep Naberius bound, the character must have drunk at least one potion of booze per three experience levels over the course of the game (e.g. a level 9 character must have drunk at least three potions of booze). Drunkenness is normally capped at 3 potions of booze per level, and further potions will not be counted.

Mark

Your tongue becomes forked. Your forked tongue can only be seen up close, and wearing a mask can hide your mouth.

Benefits

Naberius confers see invisible, and grants skill in attack spells and quarterstaff.

Naberius's active powers are as follows:

  • Bloody Tongue: Causes chosen single adjacent monster to flee. Does not count as a hostile act.
  • Silver Tongue: Attempts to tame chosen single adjacent monster. Note that the cap of 1 pet per 3 points of Cha applies. Excess pets will quickly untame.

Naberius's passive powers are as follows:

  • Crimson Fangs: Adds an extra 1d6 bite to your attacks. This attack heals you by d8 HP when you use it on a fleeing target or stun and confuse a peaceful target.
  • Rhetoric of Magic: Spellcasting is enhanced - spell explosions cover a 5x5 square, rays from spells are twice in length, and spells do +50% more damage, which stacks with other effects that grant double spell damage (e.g. the Magic Mirror of Merlin).
  • Arts and Sciences: All skills are treated as at least Basic for relevant checks, including lightsaber forms, even if restricted.

As a monster

In notdNetHack, Naberius, d, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is a carnivorous canine-like animal that can be seen via infravision.

Naberius has six bite attacks that alternate between 6d6 and 4d6 damage dice, and possesses fire resistance.

Naberius may turn traitor while tame.

Generation

Naberius is first generated when summoned from his seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is always created hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Naberius is generated with 9 to 11 potions of booze.

Naberius does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

Naberius possesses a solid 15 points of natural AC (effectively -5), and his several strong bite attacks and 20 speed allow him to deal fearsome melee damage - despite this, he is likely to be much less dangerous than this implies: an Illithanachronounbinder facing him is likely to have a high DR that reduces the damage of each bite, and will already have at least one source of very fast speed and a method to create space between them and Naberius (e.g. Eurynome's Dancing Shoes, the psionic pulse ability gained at experience level 4). Illithanachronounbinders will also likely have knowledge of some applicable wards that can further keep Naberius out of range and at their mercy.

If Naberius is killed after being summoned, he can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Naberius is placed randomly along with many other spirits of the near void on the second floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes him nonliving.
