A dissection kit is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a medium-sized chargeable tool that is made out of cloth.

Generation

Dissection kits do not randomly generate, but can be wished for.

The Undead Hunter quest goal level contains a dissection kit, which will generate in the inventory of the Crimson moon-lotus, an insight gated monster that only becomes visible after 27 insight has been accumulated. It is generated with 30–99 charges.

Research

When applied, a dissection kit will first check to see if there is an altar to the philosophies on the square – henceforth "workbench" – setting its charges to 100 if so. "Real" altars, those to gods not within the Undead Hunter pantheon, will not recharge the dissection kit. A dissection kit can still be used by non-Undead hunters, but will require another means of charging.

After it attempts to recharge itself, the kit checks to see if there are any corpses on the square, prompting for dissection if so. Corpses need to be less than 50 turns old and not have been researched or partially eaten before. Dissection increases progress in all active research paths, however each philosophy's thought has to be active for research to count towards it, except your own alignment's philosophy in the case of Undead Hunters, for which it will always count.

Using a dissection kit advances research at the same rate as using the #research extended command over a workbench. Each philosophy will still check for the suitability of the corpse: parasitology requires the corpse to not be mindless or an animal, defilement requires the corpse to have blood and reanimation requires the corpse to not be eyeless and no older than 3 turns.

The value contributed by dissection and draining is dependent on the monster difficulty of the corpse. Parasitology and reanimation research each gain between 0 and (difficulty - 1) from a successful dissection. Meanwhile, defilement gains between 1 and difficulty from a successful drainage.

Successful research checks your sanity, (save on [0–30] < your wisdom) reducing it by 0–4 on a failed save. While polymorphed into a major demon, you will always succeed this check. Dissecting a unicorn of your alignment incurs a 0–13 luck penalty, even if it wasn't killed by you. Attempting to dissect a rider or monsters with rider-type revivification instantly revives it. After successfully researching a corpse, it will become drained and dissected, if it wasn't already.

A dissection kit carried in open inventory with at least 1 charge allows upgrades to be taken even when not standing on a workbench to the corresponding philosophy. Each philosophy will still require their own instrument to be used to access their upgrade paths. This doesn't override the minimum 27 insight for each path to become available through their thoughts, nor the 10 insight needed to use a trephination kit.
