Per commit 20cbadcf, killing quest leaders no longer makes the game unwinnable, and Hippocrates and other quest leaders are given stat buffs and additional equipment to compensate. Hippocrates's speed is increased to 15, his MR score becomes 90, and he gains the ability to attempt two 3d8 clerical monster spells during each of his turns.

History

Hippocrates is introduced with most other quest leaders in NetHack 3.1.0.

Origin

Hippocrates of Kos (Greek: Ἱπποκράτης ὁ Κῷος, translit. Hippokrátēs ho Kôios; c. 460 – c. 370 BC), also known as Hippocrates II, was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is traditionally referred to as the "Father of Medicine" in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field: the use of prognosis and clinical observation, the systematic categorization of diseases, and the formulation of humoral theory. The Hippocratic school of medicine revolutionized ancient Greek medicine, and established medicine as a profession and a discipline distinct from the other fields it had traditionally been associated with (theurgy and philosophy).

Hippocrates is also credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinical medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians through the Hippocratic Corpus and other works. Though commonly portrayed as the paragon of the ancient physician and credited with coining the still-relevant Hippocratic Oath, the achievements of the writers of the Hippocratic Corpus, the practitioners of Hippocratic medicine, and the actions of Hippocrates himself were often conflated - very little is known about what Hippocrates himself actually thought, wrote and did.

Variants

Some variants make Hippocrates and other quest leaders stronger to accommodate changes to the Quest and its entry mechanics, and these changes may be incorporated into upcoming versions of NetHack or else be borrowed from them.

SporkHack

In SporkHack, Hippocrates has his difficulty increased to 24. Hippocrates's speed is increased to 15, his MR score becomes 90, and he has a 4d10 weapon attack and will attempt to cast a 2d8 clerical monster spell during each of his turns. He also gains flight, sleep resistance and stoning resistance.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, Hippocrates has an effective AC of 10, with no points in any type of AC, and he has every form of elemental resistance in the game, excluding magic resistance.

Hippocrates generates with a blessed +5 healer uniform and a +7 scalpel.

xNetHack

In xNetHack, Hippocrates's difficulty is increased to 26, and his stats are improved using the attacks and other qualities from upcoming versions of NetHack.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, Hippocrates's stats are improved as in xNetHack minus the difficulty increase, flight and resistances.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, Hippocrates's stats and resistances are improved as in SporkHack minus the difficulty increase and flight.

Hippocrates always generates with a +5 dagger. If The Staff of Aesculapius is successfully wished for by a non-Healer, there is a xx+1 chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of a hostile Hippocrates generating adjacent to the character with the artifact in his possession.

All of the above information also applies to Hack'EM.

Encyclopedia entry

Greek physician, recognized as the father of medicine. He is believed to have been born on the island of Cos, to have studied under his father, a physician, to have traveled for some time, perhaps studying in Athens, and to have then returned to practice, teach, and write at Cos. The Hippocratic or Coan school that formed around him was of enormous importance in separating medicine from superstition and philosophic speculation, placing it on a strictly scientific plane based on objective observation and critical deductive reasoning.
