A scroll of secret arts is a type of magical scroll that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack.
Generation
Scrolls of secret arts are not randomly generated, cannot be written with a magic marker, and cannot be wished for.
Various quest levels generate scrolls of secret arts:
- The Kensei quest goal level will always have 3 scrolls of secret arts randomly placed somewhere. There is a chance for 3 more scrolls to be generated: one with a 70% chance, the other with a 50% chance, and the last with a 30% chance.
- Lawful Yuki-onna Kensei will find an additional scroll of secret arts on their locate level, hidden in a single-square room in the river's crook.
Description
Reading a scroll of secret arts always has the same effects, independently of its beatitude. When read, depending on what the hero was wielding, a single skill is either unlocked up to Expert, or your current skill level with a valid weapon increases. A scroll of secret arts first attempts to unlock the hero's main-hand weapon skill up to Expert, or increases their current skill level up to Expert if they could already achieve Expert skill. Next, if the hero is two-weaponing when the scroll is read, two-weapon combat is unlocked up to Expert. If the hero could already achieve Expert two-weapon combat, they instead become more skilled in two-weapon combat, up to Expert skill.
If the hero does not meet the conditions for either case, the scroll first attempts to unlock the hero's offhand weapon skill instead, then does the same with their quivered weapon's skill. If they could already reach Expert, their skill increases up to Expert instead.
However, if you weren't two-weaponing and also weren't wielding, offhanding or quivering a weapon, you are instead taught martial arts. If the hero was already capable of martial arts, they instead unlock it up to Grand Master, or have their martial arts skill increased up to Expert if they were already capable of reaching Grand Master skill in martial arts. Being confused does not alter the scroll's effects. Reading the scroll will auto-identify it.
Monsters will not pick up or use this scroll.

The scroll of secret arts shares its base price of 3000zm with the scroll of consecration, making them trivial to identify by price identifying or use-identifying either one.
