For the monster in SpliceHack and Hack'EM, see Selkie (SpliceHack).

A selkie, n, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The selkie is a strong type of non-fey nymph that is human and demihuman that can shapeshift between a humanoid form and the form of a seal, d. Seals are canine animals with long heads and no hands that can detect monsters via scent in addition to normal vision.

Selkies have 10 points of 'special' AC and can be seen via infravision in both forms, and roaming selkies and seals will seek out magical items and other objects to collect. Selkies are capable of reaching monster level 30 in either form.

A selkie has a single weapon attack and a claw attack that can charm targets. In seal form, they have a strong bite attack.

Generation

Selkies are not randomly generated, and are normally created peaceful. They are not a valid polymorph form or genocide target, and statues and figurines of them cannot be wished for.

Selkies are only generated in the Mithardir Quest: they can appear as a shopkeeper for sand-walker's shops, a special type of shop that sells adventuring equipment. Sand-walker's shops can sell the following items, with given probabilities of an item being placed on each square:

The random armor can consist of: elven helms, high elven helms, archaic helms, leather armor (twice as likely as other armor items), archaic plate mail, elven mithril-coats, high elven plate, elven cloaks, oilskin cloaks, cloaks of invisibility, bucklers, archaic gauntlets, regular gloves, high elven gauntlets, archaic boots, and elven boots.

The random weapons can consist of: spears; pick-axes; dwarvish mattocks; two-handed swords; tridents; rapiers; long swords; crystal swords; high-elven warswords; and elven broadswords. All weapons will have coatings of acid, and will also have an object material of silver with the exception of the crystal sword.
