Tutorial

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

The tutorial is a short introduction to NetHack aimed at guiding a new player through basic game mechanics.

When the game is started, you initially appear in dungeon level 1 as normal, but you will be asked if you want to enter the tutorial if you did not have the tutorial option set. Answering yes, or having the tutorial option set to true, will transport you into the tutorial.

To avoid being prompted about the tutorial each game, put OPTIONS=notutorial in your configuration file.

Strategy

Item identities that you learn in the tutorial are removed from your discoveries list, but are not actually changed upon reentering the dungeon. If you are willing to go through the tutorial, this allows you to write down the real identities of the scroll of remove curse, ring of levitation, and wand of secret door detection, and any other items with randomized descriptions that appear in the branch.
