Origin
Tymora originates from the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons, where she is the Faerûnian goddess of good luck. Introduced when the Forgotten Realms was published as a setting in 1987, Tymora serves as a replacement for her predecessor Tyche both in-universe and out: Jeff Grubb changed her name to avoid potentially offending Wiccans. Within the setting, Tymora's existence is the result of Tyche being sundered by the moon goddess Selûne as a result of Tyche being corrupted by the machinations of Moander, deity of rot and decay - the bolt of light that was a last effort to purify Tyche instead split her into Tymora and Beshaba, goddess of bad luck.
Commonly known as Lady Luck, Tymora shone upon those who took risks and blessed those who dealt harshly with the followers of Beshaba. Tymora is cheerful and curious as a result of inheriting Tyche's grace and kindness, and thus lacks any malice or vengeance in her, as these were instead inherited by Beshaba. She is further set apart from her twin by her generosity with her godly powers, though this left her with less divinity in reserve. Tymora remained jovial even in the darkest times, preferring mischief and ironic justice to open violence, and her jaunty and high-spirited demeanor and adventurous tendencies set her apart from her generally-more-serious fellow deities. Tymora dallied in romances with many deities as Tyche before her did, and similarly cut them short as soon as she grew bored or her attention was drawn elsewhere.
It is theorized by Outer Planes scholars that Tyche had not died, but in fact gained the ability to manifest as the two twin goddesses instead of dying; however, it is not known if Tyche was the dominant personality in each of the two goddesses, or if she had faded away into an unconscious source of power.
