| Reference | monst.c in NetHack 3.0.0, line 1147 |
An unarmored soldier, @, is a type of monster that appears in older versions of NetHack from NetHack 3.0.0 to NetHack 3.1.3. The unarmored soldier is a human fighter that is part of the Yendorian army, which informally refers to a group of human mercenaries that are directly employed by the Wizard of Yendor.
Unarmored soldiers appear if the ARMY compile-time option is defined, and have a base AC of 10 unlike their armored soldier counterparts and other officers.[1] Like normal soldiers, unarmored soldiers are strong and omnivorous, and will pick up any weapons, armor, food, and other items that they come across. An unarmored soldier can follow a hero to other levels if they are adjacent.
An unarmored soldier has a single weapon attack.
Generation
Unarmored soldiers are always generated hostile, and are not a valid polymorph form.
Later versions
In NetHack 3.2.0, the MUSE option is made a default feature, and the unarmored soldier is phased out in favor of giving Yendorian Army fighters and other mercenaries the same base AC of 10, then establishing their modern starting equipment rules that aim for a rough "target" AC matching those monsters' former base AC values.
