A war hat is a type of helm that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. Its base material is iron, and it appears as a wide helm when unidentified.
The war hat is the base item for the artifact Helm of Undeath.
Generation
War hats make up 1⁄500 (0.2%) of all armor randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock war hats.
Several monsters can be generated with war hats:
- Lord Sato is always generated with a blessed +0 war hat.
- Mercenaries have an effective 1⁄60 chance of generating with a war hat that counts towards their individual target AC value if they are not generated with a helmet or leather helm.
- Terracotta soldiers created in the Kensei quest are generated with mineral war hats.
- Center of All is always generated with a large golden war hat that has the concordant object property.
- The ogre emperor is always generated with a war hat.
- Intoners are always generated with a bright cyan +4 glass war hat that has the axiomatic and reflective object properties.
- Deminymphs that are generated as cultists of the Black Mother are created with a +2 bone war hat if the hero's insight is not greater than a randomly-rolled threshold from 1 to 20.
- Lilitu that are generated as cultists of the Black Mother are created with a +4 bone war hat if the hero's insight is not greater than a randomly-rolled threshold from 1 to 20.
- Player monster kensei are always generated with war hats.
Description
While worn, a war hat grants 2 base AC, 4 DR and MC2, and wearing or removing a war hat takes 1 action. As a wide-brimmed hat, wearing it grants protection from the acid rain monster spell.
