Ithilmar is an artifact that appears in EvilHack. It is unaligned, and its base item is a set of runed barding.

Generation

Ithilmar can only be created by combining Vorpal Blade and the Gauntlets of Purity at a forge - it cannot be wished for, and will revert to its base item if left in a bones file.

Description

As a set of barding, Ithilmar can only be applied to a pet monster that is compatible for riding. While worn by a monster, Ithilmar grants 6 base AC, magic resistance and reflection to the wearer, and additionally protects them from beheading as Vorpal Blade does, prevents instadeath from digestion attacks as with spiked barding, and protects them from the effects of conflict. A pet wearing Ithilmar cannot die of starvation, and will not lose tameness when mounted by the hero or left on another level. If the hero uses a lance to joust while riding a steed equipped with Ithilmar, the lance will never break as a result of the jousts.

Strategy

Ithilmar weighs less than typical barding at 125 aum, provides three more points of base AC compared to other types of barding, and is a highly effective defense against several forms of late-game pet killers.

Encyclopedia entry

Barding (also spelled bard or barb) is body armour for war horses.
The practice of armoring horses was first extensively developed in
antiquity in the eastern kingdoms of Parthia and Pahlava, and
after the conquests of Alexander the Great it made its way into
European military practices via the Seleucid Empire and later
Byzantine Empire. Though its historical roots lie in antiquity in
the regions of what was once the Persian Empire, barded horses have
become a symbol of the late European Middle Ages chivalry and the
era of knights.
