Lucifer:
|
Lucifer, &, is a unique monster that appears in EvilHack. He is a humanoid demon prince that is arguably the strongest demon in Gehennom and the most difficult of the demon monster class. Defeating Lucifer is required to gain access to Purgatory, and he will be prevented from leaving the area by level teleportation or any other means (e.g. a cursed potion of gain level.
Lucifer is strong, capable of flight, emits light in a 3-square radius around him, can see invisible, has infravision, can be seen via infravision, has improved accuracy, and can follow a hero to other levels if he is adjacent. Lucifer is capable of covetous warping and desires the Amulet of Yendor, and the hero's pet will attack him regardless of their monster level.
Lucifer has a weapon attack, a withering claw attack, and the ability to cast a hellfire monster spell and a clerical monster spell during each of his turns. As a demon prince, Lucifer has a chance of gating in other demons with his melee attacks, including demon lords and even other demon princes. Lucifer possesses fire resistance, shock resistance, poison resistance, and stoning resistance.
Lucifer is poisonous to consume—primarily comes up if he is somehow digested by another monster, which cannot normally happen due to his size.
Generation
Lucifer is always generated hostile. He is not a valid form for polymorph, and cannot be gated in by any other demon or summoner.
Lucifer is generated beyond the walled-off section within Moloch's Sanctum at level creation—his chamber can only be reached after obtaining the Amulet of Yendor from the high priest of Moloch or imbuing The Idol of Moloch with its power, and performing either action also prevents the use of the Sanctum's up stair.
Lucifer is always given 666 HP, and is always generated with a cursed and un-eroded morning star that has the fire object property and an enchantment ranging from +4 to +6.
Lucifer does not leave a corpse upon death.
Origin
The most common meaning for Lucifer in English is as a name for the Devil in Christian theology: it appears in the Book of Isaiah in the the Vulgate and the King James Versions of the Bible as the Latin word lucifer, meaning "the morning star", "the planet Venus", or "light-bringing" (as an adjective)—it is a translation of the Hebrew word הֵילֵל (hêlēl, "Shining One"). As the Latin name for the morning appearances of the planet Venus, it corresponds to the Greek names Phosphorus (Φωσφόρος, "light-bringer") and Eosphorus (Ἑωσφόρος, "dawn-bringer").
The entity's Latin name was subsequently absorbed into Christianity as a name for the Devil. Modern scholarship generally translates the term in the relevant Bible passage (Isaiah 14:12), where the Greek Septuagint reads ὁ ἑωσφόρος ὁ πρωὶ ἀνατέλλων, as "morning star" or "shining one" rather than a proper noun. As a name for the planet in its morning aspect, "Lucifer" (Light-Bringer) is a proper noun and is capitalized in English. In Greco-Roman civilization, it was often personified and considered a god and in some versions considered a son of Aurora (the Dawn).
Encyclopedia entry
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the
nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into
heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will
sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the
north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be
like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to
the sides of the pit.
