Vampire (starting race in Hack'EM)
- This article is about the playable race in Hack'EM. For the race in other variants, see Vampire (starting race).
- For other instances of the term, see Vampire (disambiguation).
Vampires are one of the playable races available to a hero in Hack'EM. A vampire hero is part of the vampire monster class, and will appear as V if the showrace option is set on.
Vampires can start as neutral or chaotic in alignment (or unaligned if playing as an Infidel), and can be played as Archeologists, Barbarians, Convicts, Ice Mages, Dark Knights, Necromancers, Pirates, Rogues, Undead Slayers, or Wizards.
The vampire hero of Hack'EM predates their inclusion in EvilHack, so each variant's implementation will not share as many traits between them as may be expected.
Racial benefits and restrictions
Vampire heroes are undead that have many of the same traits as monster vampires in NetHack, which retain most of their traits for their appearance in Hack'EM—rather than making changes to the base vampire monster as in many other NetHack variants, Hack'EM creates a new monster known as the vampiric that serves as the base monster for vampire heroes and any vampire racial monsters.
Dietary restrictions
As with vampire heroes in other variants, a vampire hero in Hack'EM cannot consume corpses or other comestibles directly, and must instead drink blood to obtain a majority of their nutrition—this means that tins are completely inedible for them in their base form, and similar dietary restrictions also apply to vampiric monsters as well, including polymorphed heroes of other races. Vampires can safely quaff potions of blood and vampire blood: vampire heroes in roles that start with that start with potions of fruit juice will have them replaced with potions of blood, while vampire heroes that would start with food rations, cram rations or holy wafers are instead given potions of vampire blood.

Starting equipment
All vampire heroes start the game with knowledge of the potion of blood and the potion of vampire blood, as well as a medical kit with vials for the purposes of drawing blood. As mentioned prior, vampires in roles that start with potions of fruit juice will have them replaced with potions of blood, while food rations, cram rations and holy wafers are replaced with potions of vampire blood.
Vampires have some other specific replacements made to the starting equipment of their role, as well as certain items that they will not start a game with:
- Vampire Undead Slayers will always start the game with a metal +0 long sword as their primary weapon, and they will always be given chain mail which is replaced with a jacket during inventory creation.
- Their body armor will always have the "fire" object property, since they cannot gain the property intrinsically.
- They will also be given a pair of lenses after the rest of their inventory is generated.
- Vampire heroes will never be given an amulet of drain resistance, a ring of regeneration, a ring of poison resistance, any ring with the randomized appearance of a "silver ring", or any wand with the randomized appearance of a "silver wand".
- Any silver items that a vampire hero would start the game with have their object material changed to bone.
