Food poisoning is acquired by eating an old corpse. It is marked by the text FoodPois
on the status line. It is eventually fatal, but can be cured by doing one of the following:
- praying to your god
- eating a eucalyptus leaf
- quaffing a non-cursed potion of extra healing or full healing, a blessed potion of healing, or a potion of holy water (if not chaotic)
- applying a non-cursed unicorn horn
- casting a spell of cure sickness
- #invoking the Staff of Aesculapius
- polymorphing into a new version of yourself or a sickness-resistant monster
Food poisoning is completely preventable (in NetHack) by avoiding eating old corpses. Corpses left by zombies and other undead are always considered old. Unfortunately, you never know how long it takes for a corpse to become old.
