Itlachiayaque is archeologist quest artifact in recent versions of UnNetHack that replaces the Orb of Detection. It is lawful shield of reflection that confers ESP, fire resistance and half spell damage when it is carried. When invoked it acts as a blessed scroll of stinking cloud, that is it allows the player to target the cloud at any visible tile.

Strategy

Itlachiayaque is mild upgrade from the Orb of Detection that Archeologists used to receive in older UnNetHack versions. Magic resistance was replaced with reflection, but at the cost of blocking the off-hand. Fire resistance and half spell damage are welcome, though the former will probably be available intrinsically anyway. ESP is retained but invoke ability is definite step up from Orb's of Detection invisibility; the stinking cloud is surprisingly efficient in clearing masses of non-poison resistant enemies and will shine against barracks full of soldiers.

Keep in mind, that the change of the quest artifact also means that the quest nemesis, Minion of Huhetotl will now have reflection. Therefore don't rely on ray attacks when fighting him.

Encyclopedia entry

Tezcatlipoca (Fiery Mirror) was undoubtedly the Jupiter of the
Nahua pantheon. He carried a mirror or shield [ Itlachiayaque ],
from which he took his name, and in which he was supposed to see
reflected the actions and deeds of mankind. The evolution of this
god from the status of a spirit of wind or air to that of the
supreme deity of the Aztec people presents many points of deep
interest to students of mythology.
