A mist wolf, d, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The mist wolf is a carnivorous canines that possess a pair of bite attacks; the first bite is strong and can inflict cold damage.

In SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM, mist wolves hit as +2 weapons and require a +1 weapon or better to be hit.

Generation

Mist wolves are always generated as hostile and appear in small groups. They are not randomly generated in Gehennom.

Strategy

The mist wolf is among the most dangerous non-unique canines in its appearances, with strength comparable to the hell hound: though it lacks a breath weapon, it is faster in comparison, increasing the amount of damage it can inflict. Cold resistance will prevent any damage from the first bite attack.

History

The mist wolf first appears in SLASH 6.

In the defunct Drow quest, several mist wolves were generated on some of the floors at level creation: one in each of the upper filler levels, two in each of the lower filler levels, and eight on the goal level. Mist wolves could also appear among the random d that made up 14% of the monsters randomly generated there.

Origin

The encyclopedia entry may come from the Shannara series of high fantasy novels written by Terry Brooks, where it is part of an in-universe bestiary.

Encyclopedia entry

This hazy canine (_canis precipitous_) is thought to have a good
heart hiding somewhere within its green, silky hide. Unfortunately,
the beast is usually ravenous, as its diet of mist is not
very filling, at least compared to human flesh.
