In previous versions of NetHack, putting on a ring of stealth did not give any special message to indicate that you gained stealth (unlike [[elven boots]] or [[elven cloak]]), making it more difficult to identify. This is no longer true since [[NetHack 3.6.0]], where a ring of stealth will behave in exactly the same way as elven gear in this regard.

The ring of stealth is a ring that appears in NetHack.

Effects

Wearing a ring of stealth gives you extrinsic stealth; polymorphing and eating the ring may grant you stealth as an intrinsic.

As of NetHack 3.6.0, putting on a ring of stealth will auto-identify the ring in a similar manner to elven boots or an elven cloak, unless you have another source of stealth.

Strategy

The ring of stealth is a good choice for avoiding sleeping monsters and tackling special rooms (such as the Sokoban treasure zoo), especially if you do not have intrinsic stealth, and you either have not found any elven equipment or else your current boots and cloak are useful enough as is (e.g. speed boots or a cloak of magic resistance). Characters with intrinsic stealth will find the ring redundant, and may opt to polypile it once they have it identified in some manner; alternately, they may want to hang on to it in case intrinsic stealth is lost.

In 3.6.0 and later versions, as well as variants based off them, the ring's auto-identification is useful for saving players a trip to the sink.
