The spotted jelly is a sessile acidic monster that appears in NetHack. As with the blue jelly it possesses only a passive attack, whose damage is based on monster level. Being acidic, its passive attack can also corrode iron weapons and armor.

Strategy

Although it does not move, its passive acid attack can deal quite a bit of damage to unsuspecting players. Resistance to this attack is fairly hard to gain, being provided only by yellow dragon scales/mail, an alchemy smock, or self-polymorph. More urgently, however, pets will often blindly attack spotted jellies, placing them at risk of death from the passive attack; mind flayers are particularly vulnerable, sustaining acid damage for each individual flay, are particularly vulnerable.

For this reason, these monsters are usually best left alone unless they are blocking something vital, which is fairly rare; if you have any pets, especially valuable ones, keep them away if possible. If you must attack a spotted jelly, avoid melee and use a corrodeproof means of attacking (e.g. a stack of elven daggers) and/or any attacking spells or wands.
