The valuable wand of speed monster is a wand that will make monsters (including your character) speed up.

Effects

The value of this wand is that it can grant the player (and pets) intrinsic speed when zapped at oneself. Gaining intrinsic speed by zapping yourself also exercises dexterity.

Zapping a peaceful creature with this wand (accidentally or otherwise) will anger it. While pets won't be angered or become less tame, they, like all targets, do have a chance of resisting: when you zap a pet successfully, you will get the message "(Pet's name) is suddenly moving faster!" If there is no message, the pet probably resisted, or was fast already. You can check to see if a pet has intrinsic speed (fast) by applying a stethoscope to the pet.

Zapping a pet with this wand will not make an Elbereth engraving disappear.

Identification

Engraving with a wand of speed monster will give the message "The bugs on the floor speed up!". Even though the message is unambiguous, the wand is not auto-identified. This is left up to the player.

Strategy

Once you have zapped yourself with this wand once, the intrinsic speed is permanent. Thereafter, these wands are mostly useful for enhancing pets and steeds. However, note that cockatrices, skeletons and shades can potentially cause you to lose your intrinsic speed in the late game, so it's probably a wise idea to keep one in your bag in case of this.
