A deep dragon:

- This article is about the monster in dNetHack and its variants. For the monster in other variants, see deep dragon.
A deep dragon, D, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. Known in previous versions as a deep wyrm, the deep dragon is a type of dragon that has much higher effective AC and damage reduction than the other adult dragons in the same monster class, and has very strong life draining abilities. All 21 of a deep dragon's AC points are in the natural category, and it has 8 points of natural damage reduction.
A deep dragon is amphibious, breathless and capable of tunneling—like many other dragons, it is carnivorous, can see invisible and has a strong, quadrupedal and thick-skinned form with wings, an elongated head and forelimbs that can manipulate objects. The deep dragon will seek out gold, gems and other magical items to collect, and is not oviparous since they are considered to be immortal and unchanging (though younger forms naturally still exist).
A deep dragon has a life-draining breath weapon, a powerful life-draining bite, two strong claw attacks, and a powerful tail slap that occurs each global turn and targets an opponent adjacent to the deep dragon. Deep dragons possess magic resistance, poison resistance and drain resistance.
A deep dragon is poisonous to consume, and eating a deep dragon corpse or tin, or else quaffing its blood, has a 4⁄5 chance of granting the same effect as an uncursed potion of gain level, increasing the eater's level by 1 and boosting HP and energy—the corpse always grants this effect if its blood has been drained by a blood-drinker. The deep dragon's blood can also be used as a substitute for the potion of gain level in alchemy.
Generation
Randomly generated deep dragons are created hostile, and are not a valid form for polymorph. A baby deep dragon can grow up into a deep dragon.
Deep dragons may appear among the court of a throne room ruled by an orc of the ages of stars.
Deep dragons can appear among the monsters randomly generated by either sitting on a throne or looting it while the hero is confused and carrying gold (provided there is no chest on the level).
Deep dragons have a 1⁄3 chance of dropping a set of uncursed +0 deep dragon scales upon death along with their corpse (which is guaranteed to drop under normal circumstances, e.g. they are not disintegrated), and the chance is reduced to 1⁄20 if the dragon was revived—if the dragon is turned to stone, their statue will contain scales with the same probabilities.
