A droven lance is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a huge-sized weapon, making it two-handed for a medium-sized hero, and uses the lance skill. It has a default material of obsidian, and appears as a "lance" with its material displayed when unidentified.
The Sceptre of Lolth is an artifact that can take the form of a droven lance.
Generation
Drow heroes that are not Madpeople start with knowledge of the droven lance—drow Madpeople that open their quest box will regain their knowledge of the droven lance.
Droven lances are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Droven lances can be found in multiple (usually drow-related) Quest branches:
- Two droven lances appear on the lower filler levels of the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest during level creation—one is placed randomly in the inner and outer ring areas, while another is placed randomly among the buried items in the secret corridors.
- Two droven lances are each randomly placed on the locate level of the Drow Noble quest during level creation, and another is randomly placed on each of the lower filler levels during level creation.
- A droven lance is randomly placed on each of the upper filler levels of the Hedrow Shared quest during level creation.
- A droven lance is randomly placed on the locate level of the Hedrow Noble quest during level creation, and another is randomly placed on each of the lower filler levels during level creation.
Droven lances can be generated in the magic item vaults within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.
A drider is always generated with a droven lance.
Description
A droven lance inflicts piercing damage, dealing 1d10 damage versus all monsters, and has a +2 to-hit bonus. As with normal lances, droven lances behave similarly to polearms and only deal full damage when pounding monsters or performing mounted melee attacks, and they can also be used for jousting. A hero that wields a droven lance at Skilled or better in lances gains the "stop thrust", "braced", "penetrate armor", and "lunge" expert traits.
In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters that are pounding with polearms will favor the droven lance over the bardiche and prefer a halberd or better to the droven lance—monsters that can use the droven lance in melee will favor it over the crysknife and prefer a katana or better to the droven lance.
