A grotesque peeper, g, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The grotesque peeper is an insight monster that is a medium-sized and gremlin-like humanoid: they are strong, unbreathing and thick-skinned, and can see perfectly in the light and dark via extramission. Seeing a grotesque peeper can lower the hero's sanity and raise their insight. Grotesque peepers have 14 points of natural AC, as well as 6 points of natural DR for every slot minus the head. They cannot be made tame.

Grotesque peepers have a life-draining single-target gaze attack, a pair of claw attacks with the primary and off-hand, and a bite attack, and have a full base attack bonus of +1 to-hit per monster level. They possess stoning resistance and also resist blunt damage.

Grotesque peepers can be warded by a hamsa or by an Elder Sign at any level of reinforcement.

Generation

Grotesque peepers are not randomly generated, and are normally created peaceful. They require at least 30 insight to physically interact with, and are not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.

Grotesque peepers can appear as insight merchants on the Neutral Quest:

  • A grotesque peeper has a 110 of being randomly placed on the second Lethe river level during level creation.
  • A grotesque peeper has a 34 of being randomly placed on each of the first level maps for the Gulf of N'Kai during level creation, as well as the maps for the second, third and bottom levels.

Grotesque peepers will offer an "orrery glyph" to a hero that chats to them with an artifact wielded in their main hand—accepting this offer and giving away a gifted artifact will anger the god that gifted it to the hero. The thought from an orrery glyph grants a +30% base attack bonus as well as an additional +1d20 to-hit against targets that the hero can see.

Grotesque peepers do not leave a corpse upon death.
