Generation
Living dolls—and lifeless dolls—do not randomly generate. Within the Neutral Quest, a living doll may be generated on the first three levels:
- On the entrance to the lost cities level (10%)
- On either variants of the river head levels (10%)
- On either of the stockade levels (10%)
- One parasitized doll will be generated on the Alhoon's Fortress level
- One lifeless doll will be generated in the Undead Hunter quest home, within a building to the top-left
- One lifeless doll will be generated in Vampiric Madpeople's quest boxes
Description
Dolls are not generated "alive" per se, and perception of the doll changes with insight: without any insight, a living doll will be inanimate and appear as the lifeless doll item on the ground. Once a hero has between 1–20 insight, determined the first time a living doll would be generated on a level, they will attempt to animate each turn, turning into a living doll. They will be generated with 50–95 hit points and do not leave behind corpses, instead becoming inert again, which may then reanimate later. Killing a lifeless doll will make it return hostile upon reawakening.
A living doll will always be generated peaceful, wandering the level. When chatted to, the living doll will sell various types of consumable doll items that are randomized when they are generated. Each doll is sold for a price of 800 zorkmids, and all living dolls also sell a single doll tear at a price of 8000 zorkmids. Ocasionally, a doll will also offer effigies for 800 zorkmids.
Origin
dNetHack's living doll is inspired by Bloodborne's doll NPC.
