Bloodborne
Bloodborne is a 2015 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game follows a Hunter through the decrepit Gothic, Victorian-era inspired city of Yharnam, whose inhabitants are afflicted with a blood-borne disease which transforms the residents into horrific beasts. Attempting to find the source of the plague, the player's character unravels the city's mysteries while fighting beasts and cosmic beings.
Bloodborne has received widespread acclaim from critics and players alike, with stellar reviews and scores: the game sold 152,567 physical retail units within the first week of release in Japan, ranking first place within the Japanese software sales charts for that particular week; it debuted at number two in the United Kingdom software retail chart; and it was the second best-selling software in March the United States, despite being released at the end of the month there. By April 2015, Bloodborne sold over one million units, and by September 2015 the game had over two million units sold: it was awarded the 2015 Game of the Year by several video game review sites, including GameTrailers, Eurogamer, Destructoid, and Edge, along with being awarded the "2015 PlayStation 4 Game of the Year" by IGN. By November 2025, the game sold 9.3 million units total.
Description
The overall aesthetics, plot and setting of Bloodborne have many clear influences from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the general Cthulhu Mythos, Bram Stoker's Dracula, FromSoftware's closely-related Dark Souls series of games, and the architectural design of real-world locations in countries such as Romania and the Czech Republic. Its influence on NetHack consists entirely of various items, creatures and other elements such as settings being adapted partially or wholesale in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, which are themselves all significantly influenced by the Cthulhu Mythos.
The Undead Hunter is a role in the aforementioned variants that functions as both a homage to and "adaptation" of Bloodborne itself, as well as an analogue to the Undead Slayer role that exists in SLASH'EM (which dNetHack as a whole is initially derived from) and similar NetHack variants.
