Moon's Chosen

Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Moon's Chosen is the secondary Undead Hunter quest nemesis, and is the cause of the plague of beasts. The Moon's Chosen is a huge monster that is a human, demihuman and an alien. "Humanoid" shaped armor may fit the Moon's Chosen, except her head, which counts as two sizes larger than usual, fit to "huge" armor. The Moon's Chosen's head has a higher DR rating than the rest of her body, with 12 natural DR. She does not leave behind a corpse and conveys no intrinsics when eaten, but leaves behind a columnar mass after being killed.

She has 2 double-damage reaching attacks that can steal the Stake of Withering and Amulet, 1 lycanthropy bite attack, can cast 1 clerical spell and has a passive frost attack. The Moon's Chosen gains 1–3 extra attacks from its cranial wolfpack once per turn and has intrinsic displacement. She is vulnerable to shock, as well as to silver weapons and attacks. Clerical spells chosen will be one of the following:

  • Summon mist wolves
  • Mass cure wounds (close)
  • Mass cure wounds (far)
  • Protection
  • Paralyze
  • Nightmare
  • Nail to the sky

Generation

The Moon's Chosen is generated meditating on the goal level of the Undead Hunter quest within the index wolf's hovel, but won't be visible to a character with less than 27 insight.

Description

The Moon's Chosen passively influences the Undead Hunter quest in two major ways. Before being killed:

After completing the quest for the first time, a character may be recalled, after which they need to kill the Moon's Chosen to formally complete the quest for the second time. Killing the Moon's Chosen:

  • Draws the Moon closer. The hunting moon comes into effect, counting as a full moon for most purposes
  • Total AC is reduced by 12 as well as DR by 12 (8 from the upper torso slot, 2 from the lower torso slot and 2 from the rest)
  • Stops the spread of the plague of beasts
  • Insight weapons gain the insight damage bonus like from being wielded by a Madperson
  • Changes the state of the Stake of Withering, making it aggravate monsters it previously scared

Strategy

The Moon's Chosen can be warded by gorgoneions and the yellow sign.

Origins

The Moon-entity holds a constant presence over the Undead Hunter quest, watching over its chosen. Its influence gave rise to the scourge of beasts within the Undead Hunter quest, though how the Moon's Chosen came to the Moon-entity's attention is not disclosed. After her defeat, the Moon's Chosen passes the Moon-entity's attention to the Undead Hunter, becoming stalked by mist wolves for the rest of the game. The last confrontation with the Moon-entity occurs on the Astral Plane, where they are pitted against Moon-entity monsters, foetid angels, aether wolves, moon fleas and tongue puppets.

The Moon presence, a Great One, is the final boss in one of Bloodborne's endings, and is closely linked to the hunter's dream. The Celestial Emissary is a kin Great One that appears with a bulbous water filled head. Created by the healing church through experimentation, the emissaries are an ascended sort of being, a bridge to "divinity". The Moon's Chosen and the Moon-entity of dNetHack also take inspiration from Junji Ito's 2005 short story "Hellstar Remina".
