A bardiche is a type of weapon that appears in NetHack. It is a two-handed polearm that is made of iron, and appears as a long poleaxe when unidentified.

Generation

In addition to random generation, general shops and antique weapons outlets can sell bardiches.

Watchmen and soldiers may be generated with a bardiche.[1]

Strategy

The bardiche has some of the best damage among the polearms, though it is also among the heavier polearms at 120 aum. Bardiches have the highest average damage against large monsters, and their average damage against small monsters is also among the best, with only the halberd outperforming it in that regard.

History

The bardiche is introduced with all other polearms in NetHack 1.3d.

Origin

Bardiches-Colored.png

A bardiche - also known as a berdiche, bardische, bardeche, or berdish - is a type of polearm used from the 14th to 17th centuries in Europe, with its usage traced back to early 14th-century Austria, though numerous medieval manuscripts from c. 1250 depict very similar weapons. The blade of a bardiche varied greatly in shape, but was most often a long, cleaver-type blade that lacked the spear point and back hook of a halberd, and was much heavier than a halberd on average (contrary to their portrayal in NetHack); the blade was attached to the pole either via two sockets (one at the top of the pole and one lower, at the base of the blade), or via one socket at the top and one surface mount at the base of the wooden shaft.

The length of a bardiche's blade was generally very long for an axe-type edge, usually exceeding 2 feet (60 cm) - conversely, they often had the shortest shaft of all polearms at no more than 5 feet (1.5 m). Bardiches rely more on the weight of their heavy blade to do damage, making them more similar to the Dane axe than a "true" polearm. In the 16th century, the bardiche was standard equipment for the streltsy, the arquebusiers of Imperial Russia established by Ivan the Terrible, as well as the infantry of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and was used to rest handguns upon when firing.

Variants

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the bardiche has its weight reduced to 80 aum.

Center of All is generated with a +0 large concordant golden bardiche.

NetHack Fourk

NetHack Fourk removes the bardiche and many other polearms.

xNetHack

xNetHack removes the bardiche and many other polearms.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, Baphomet is always generated with a bardiche that has the venom object property.

A bardiche can be created at a forge by combining a battle-axe and a spear. This also applies to Hack'EM.
