A lord is a type of monster in NetHack that is considered to have a position of authority above "mundane" monsters of their type or class, and is designated by the M2_LORD monster flag (and the is_lord() macro that queries it).
Description
A monster lord has the following traits:
- They gain a +1 multishot bonus when throwing or shooting projectiles.[1]
- When generating monster starting inventory, if a lord has a weapon attack and no special rules for their species, they are more likely to receive one of the default weapon sets (1⁄2, versus 5⁄12 for normal monsters).[2]
- An angelic being that is a lord and generates with a weapon or shield will always generate with a shield of reflection, and its weapon will always be upgraded into Sunsword or Demonbane with an equal probability of each, assuming neither artifact has been created in that game.[3] This currently only applies to Archons in practice.
- Demon summoning by performing same-race sacrifice will always summon a demon lord if possible (i.e. Juiblex or Yeenoghu), falling back to a normal major demon if a demon lord cannot be generated.[4]
