- For the item known as a "nunchaku" in NetHack, see flail.
A nunchaku is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a melee weapon that is one-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the flail skill. It has a base material of wood, and appears as a set of chain-sticks when unidentified.
Generation
Monks start the game with knowledge of the nunchaku's appearance.
The nunchaku makes up 1⁄200 (0.5%) of all randomly-generated weapons. General stores, used armor dealerships and antique weapons outlets can sell nunchaku.
Descripton
Nunchaku gain a multi-strike bonus when wielded by a hero with sufficient skill in flails, and can be applied to disarm monsters similar to a bullwhip: a hero that can train martial arts gains a proficiency bonus to disarming based on their lower skill level between martial arts and flails. Monks can utilize nunchaku for their special fighting moves, and can use the disarming ability as a free action once per turn, which uses the same free act as the stethoscope.
Origin
The nunchaku (sometimes known as "nunchuks" in English) is an Asian weapon consisting of two usually-wooden six-inch sticks connected at their ends by a 1-inch metal chain or a rope, and was popularized by martial artists Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto. Nunchaku are traditionally held to have also been adapted from short flails that were originally employed in threshing rice, as were similar weapons such as the the three-section staff. The nunchaku is most widely used in martial arts such as Okinawan kobudō and karate: it is intended for training, since practicing with it enables the development of quick hand movements and improves posture. Modern nunchaku may be made of metal, plastic or fiberglass instead of the traditional wood; toys and replicas may be made of polystyrene foam or plastic.
