A potion of enlightenment is a type of magical potion that appears in NetHack.

Generation

Wizards may generate with a potion of enlightenment as any of their three random starting potions.[1]

Potions of enlightenment make up 150 (2%) of all randomly-generated potions. General stores and liquor emporiums can sell potions of enlightenment.

Mixing a potion of confusion and either a potion of gain level or a potion of gain energy has a 310 chance of producing a potion of enlightenment.

Description

Quaffing a non-cursed potion of enlightenment exercises wisdom and provides enlightenment, allowing the player to momentarily see the hero's intrinsics and other attributes;[2] a blessed potion additionally increases intelligence and wisdom by 1.[3] Quaffing a cursed potion abuses wisdom and prints a message with no other effect, prompting the player to type-name the potion.[4]

Mixing a potion of levitation with a potion of enlightenment has a 35 chance of producing a potion of gain level.

Strategy

Potions of enlightenment are sometimes worth blessing to increase your mental stats. Otherwise, they are frequently saved for alchemy once identified to use in creating potions of gain level.

The potion of enlightenment first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, there is a 35 chance of a potion of enlightenment generating in the boulder-blocked stash on the last floor of the Dragon Caves at level creation.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the last floor of The Wyrm Caves uses the last floor map from the Dragon Caves of UnNetHack, including the 35 chance of generating a potion of enlightenment in the stash.
