Origin

From the old french "rondeu". A type of long thrusting dagger designed primarily to pierce through chain-mail links and unarmored gaps in armor. Often seen as a single-edged triangular blade, wide at the base and tapering to a fine point. The name was derived from the circular disks used in the guard and pommel, designed to fit closely in the hand when gripped to prevent the hand from sliping while puncturing armor.

Encyclopedia

Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible
To feeling as to sight? or art thou but
A dagger of the mind, a false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?
I see thee yet, in form as palpable
As this which now I draw.
