Screaming is a temporary status property that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Description

A hero that is afflicted with screaming will be unable to focus and cannot spellcast, chat to monsters or read scrolls and spellbooks, although they can still read syllables of power. A monster that begins screaming will usually lose movement points for their next action. Screaming naturally creates noise that will wake up sleeping monsters nearby.

Screaming is often associated with the temporary madness of the same name, though the property can be caused by attacks from monsters as well.

Sources

Screaming can be caused by the following:

  • The "screaming" temporary madness.
  • Two different types of mummy curses can cause screaming if the hero kills an applicable mummy.
    • The soldier mummy and priest mummy can inflict a mummy curse on death that halves the hero's current HP rounded down and causes them to scream for 2 (more) rounds.
    • Hmnyw-Pharaoh can inflict a mummy curse on death that reduces the hero's maximum HP and lowers their current HP to 13 + 1 of its current value, along with causing them to scream for 2 (more) rounds. The Stranger can also inflict this through its spellcasting.
  • Weapons that have the flaying or excoriating object properties will cause unarmored targets hit by them to scream from pain unless they are thick-skinned: against the hero, this causes 2 more turns of screaming for flaying weapons, and 1 more for excoriating weapons; against living monsters, flaying weapons will cause them to lose 6 movement points, while excoriating weapons cause them to lose 2 movement points.
  • Monster attacks that inflict intense pain can reduce strength as with poison attacks and cause screaming. The attack will not cause screaming if the target is nonliving, an android, a race of elemental, a Great Old One, or a tomb herd monster.

Remedies

Screaming can be cured by the following methods:

  • A source of clear thoughts will help maintain the hero's focus enough to prevent screaming.
