Talk:Samurai
In a previous version of this article I said " a bardiche, halberd, or even a spetum are good secondary weapons." (for two-weapon combat). I took this on good faith from a spoiler site. However, are'nt polearms 2 handed weapons? How are you supposed to double wield a polearm and a sword, or was the spoiler incorrect?

- The spoiler may have been trying to say polearms are a good backup weapon, rather than a good weapon to wield in your left hand. --Jayt 22:36, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
"Samurai don't have the magic resistance intrinsic"
What's that trying to say? That the samurai artifact doesn't provide MR?
In the article it says "Otherwise, saber or scimitar advanced to skilled level both beat the long sword." Samurai can only attain basic in those weapon skills. I'm re-writing that paragraph slightly (the statement pointed out above becomes untrue when you calculate Basic level penalties in).

laquered armor
In mkobj.c#564 it looks like the armor that samurai start with is made erodeproof? I find that I typically start with rustproof splint mail, and occasionally it is also blessed. (not sure what the % chance is for blessed...also my weapons are sometimes created blessed too) MysterX 09:27, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Failure rate
On the Spellbook of clairvoyance page, it notes that Samurai get a "bonus reduction in failure rate". I'm not sure if this is true, but if it is, then I think it ought to be mentioned here (and if it isn't it needs to be removed from the other page)... Rezecib 10:15, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
- The special spell page lists the Samurai's special spell as Clairvoyance. That would be why they have reduced failure rates. -- Qazmlpok 15:06, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
The joshu
I was attacked by a monster called "The joshu" in Nethack 3.4.3. Joshu redirected me here. What is this monster? --82.130.23.80 14:52, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
- It was most likely a Doppelganger imitating a Samurai Player monster. -- Qazmlpok (talk) 15:05, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Basic attack spell skill?
Playing vanilla 3.6.2 (with the modern tileset) as a human samurai, the game told me I could not enhance the attack spellcasting skill any further from basic. This article says samurai can reach skilled in attack spellcasting. Is that inaccurate?
Also, the "Skill" page says samurai can only reach basic attack spellcasting. --Bobber the Wise (talk) 00:31, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
The skill table generator has yet to be updated for 3.6.2. Attack spells were nerfed for Samurai, yes, but in return they can raise their skill in the school of their special spell like other classes now. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 16:15, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Japanese names
I noticed Bruce tried to split off the Japanese names to a new article without much prior discussion, so trying to jump-start that discussion now and see what should be done with all that, as well as whether or not to bother including it at all if or when we prioritize changes to the role and its strategy in variants. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 10:31, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- This only applies to two roles, one of which is variant-only, so I say keep it on the role pages for now. If and when vanilla adds alternate names that aren't Samurai-exclusive, we can create a page for them. --Darth l33t (talk) 13:14, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- Granted, though that's as far as Japanese names specifically go - for alternate names in general, variants also use the Pirate and Cartomancer, and I'd been wondering about covering all that on the page I linked (though not exclusively on that page, mind). --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 19:06, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
