Thjofastafur stave

In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, the thjofastafur stave is a ward which scares n nymph and l leprechaun. Unlike regular wards, staves must be carved with an edged weapon into another, wooden weapon. The carved weapon must be dropped on the floor at the hero's feet to ward off monsters. Carving the thjofastafur stave takes 2 turns, and it cannot be reinforced further. Wielding a weapon carved with a thjofastafur stave will warn of the same monsters it wards off.

Generation

¹⁄₄₀₀ of all wooden weapons are generated with a thjofastafur stave carving. Wood weapons engraved with a thjofastafur stave cannot be wished for.

Dwarf heroes both start the game with knowledge of the thjofastafur stave.

Thjofastafur staves only appear in spellbooks of level 3 and above. The odds of a spellbook containing a thjofastafur stave are:

• Level 3 spellbooks: ¹⁄₁₂ (~8.33%) chance.
• Level 4 spellbooks: ⁷⁄₁₀₈ (~6.48%) chance.
• Level 5 spellbooks: ¹⁄₁₆ (6.25%) chance.
• Level 6 spellbooks: ⁵⁄₇₂ (~6.92) chance.
• Does not appear in level 7 spellbooks.
