A yellow mold, F, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. The yellow mold is a type of mold that is sessile and lacks limbs, eyes or a head like other molds.

A yellow mold has a passive attack that stuns the attacker for some turns depending on the attacker's level, which can trigger when it is attacked in melee and not killed.[1][2] Yellow molds possess poison resistance.

A yellow mold corpse is poisonous to eat. Eating a yellow mold corpse or tin has a roughly 115 chance (7%) of granting poison resistance, and will always cause hallucination when finished.

Generation

Randomly generated yellow molds are always created hostile.

Strategy

Yellow molds are not overtly dangerous for the hero if they are attentive: attacking one carelessly in melee will cause them to be stunned for a while, and attempting to move while stunned risks the hero stepping into nearby traps or attacking and even killing their pet. Pets can be stunned by attacking a yellow mold as well, but due to how stunning works for monsters they will almost never remain stunned for long; pets with poison resistance can eat the corpse without worrying about hallucination or confusion. Any ranged attack can also kill a yellow mold easily without risk.

History

The yellow mold first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, yellow molds have a 910 chance of reviving from their corpses like other non-lichen fungi and molds.[3] A yellow mold has an overall 7.4% chance of generating from a corpse that reach 51 turns of age, is not acidic, and is not located within or on top of a square of water, ice or lava.[4][5][6][7]

Yellow molds can be generated in fungus farms.

All of the above information also applies to SlashTHEM.

xNetHack

In xNetHack, yellow molds and other fungi and molds take extra damage from copper items, and similar to SLASH'EM they can grow from old corpses, though with much lower odds.

Yellow mold corpses can be used to brew potions by dipping them in fruit juice, which eventually turns the juice into a potion of confusion.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, yellow molds and other fungi and molds take extra damage from copper items, and similar to SLASH'EM they can grow from old corpses. A yellow mold can grow up into a yellow moldier.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, monsters will avoid eating yellow molds and other corpses that cause hallucination.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, yellow molds and other fungi and molds take extra damage from copper items, and similar to SLASH'EM they can grow from old corpses. As in SpliceHack, a yellow mold can grow up into a yellow moldier.

Similar to xNetHack, yellow mold corpses can be used to brew potions by dipping them in fruit juice, eventually producing a potion of confusion.
