In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notdNetHack, a spellcasting focus is an item that can decrease the hero's spellcasting failure rate wihle wielded.
Description
There are generally two types of spellcasting focus items:
- "Mundane" focuses are based on specific items or item types, usually improve the success rate of spells from specific spell schools, and can include artifacts with matching base items.
- Artifacts that usually improve the success rate of multiple spell types, but may also have more specific restrictions.

List of item-based focuses
- Khakkhara: improves the success rate of cleric and healing spells, and improves the success rate of all spells for Priests and Monks
- Bell: improves the success rate of cleric and healing spells, and improves the success rate of all spells for Priests
- Scalpel: improves the success rate of healing spells.
- Crystal ball: improves the success rate of divination spells.
- Quarterstaff: improves the success rate of attack spells.
- Shepherd's crook: improves the success rate of enchantment spells.
- Athame: improves the success rate of attack and enchantment spells.
- Wand: improves the success rate of all spells for Wizards.
List of artifact focuses
- Four artifacts improve the success rate of all spells unconditionally:
- The Death-Spear of Vhaerun improves the success rate of attack spells, but only for drow characters that began the game as males.
- Callandor improves the success rate of all spells, but only for characters that began the game as males.
