A gnoll chieftain, G, is a monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM as part of the gnome monster class. The gnoll chieftain, 9, also appeaars in SpliceHack as part of the gnoll monster class. A gnoll chieftain is an omnivorous humanoid that can hide themselves, see invisible, and will seek out gold, gems and various other items to pick up. A tame gnoll chieftain may turn traitor.
A gnoll chieftain has two weapon attacks. In Hack'EM, gnoll chieftains possess poison resistance.
A gnoll chieftain corpse is poisonous to eat.
Generation
Gnoll chieftains are only randomly generated in Gehennom, and are always created hostile. They are not a valid form for normal polymorph. A gnoll warrior can grow up into a gnoll chieftain.
A gnoll chieftain is always generated with an orcish helm, an orcish shield, a katana, and a random offensive item, with a 1⁄10 chance of generating with blue dragon scale mail and a 9⁄10 chance of crystal plate mail.[1]
Origin
The gnoll is a creature that appears in various types of fantasy media, and is generally portrayed as a human-hyena hybrid of a form of humanoid hyena. The term originates from 1912 short story collection The Book of Wonder by Lord Dunsany, with one short story titled "How Nuth Would Have Practised His Art upon the Gnoles".
The gnoll of Dungeons & Dragons is introduced in the first boxed set of the game, and gnolls are described in Book 2: Monsters and Treasure as a "cross between Gnomes and Trolls (...perhaps, Lord Sunsany did not really make it all that clear)". These early gnolls were stated to be similar to hobgoblins with +2 morale, while a gnoll king and his bodyguard fought similar to trolls without regenerative power. This may serve as the basis for gnolls being part of the gnome monster class in SLASH'EM and other derived variants.
The 1st Monster Manual for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and all subsequent material describe gnolls as aggressive desert-dwelling nomads that resemble humanoid hyenas, and actively raid and plunder other settlements; it also introduces Yeenoghu, the demon god of gnolls who many of them serve and worship. The gnoll chieftain is described in the same Monster Manual as accompanying bands of 100 gnolls or more alongside 2-12 guards, and can also be found in a gnoll lair with 5-20 guards. Gnoll chieftains are more likely to be seen in patriarchal gnoll societies, though all gnolls track bloodlines maternally; they are the biggest and strongest of the tribe, who acts as chieftain, and sometimes keep harems of wives who are the strongest fighters among the clan after the chieftain themselves.
