Daughter of Naunet

A daughter of Naunet, S, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The daughter of Naunet is a carnivorous and oviparous snake-like animal that is always female, and they are gigantic in size with a slithy and amorphous shape, a long head and no limbs. Daughters of Naunet are aquatic, primordial and reptilian beings: they are weldproof, capable of swimming, possess enhanced regeneration, can see well in the dark but are blinded by light, have a superb sense of smell, and can track a hero via sight or scent. Seeing a daughter of Naunet causes the hero to lose sanity and increase their insight.

Daughters of Naunet have a long-necked bite that is strong and can inflict severe poison and partially breach poison resistance, a tentacle attack that wets the target's inventory, a tail slap attack that can cause drowning, and a strong bearhug attack. They can trigger the "helminthophobia" madness with their tentacle attacks. Daughters of Naunet possess poison resistance, cold resistance and stoning resistance—due to their watery amorphous body, they lack innards and are thus completely immune to disemboweling effects such as the "opening" power of the spirit Otiax, but will also take doubled damage from desiccation attacks.

Daughters of Naunet are poisonous to consume, which primarily comes up if they are subjected to Ahazu (whose Abduction and Engulf powers circumvent hazardous effects from consuming a monster or their corpse), and consuming a daughter of Naunet can grant poison resistance.

Daughters of Naunet can be warded by the fully-reinforced Elder Sign.

Generation

Daughters of Naunet are always generated hostile.

Daughters of Naunet may be generated as minions of Apep. Hostile daughters of Naunet may be generated by the summon nasties monster spell when cast by the Wizard of Yendor or a non-lawful hostile spellcaster.

The Hmnyw-Pharaoh has a 121 chance of creating a daughter of Naunet whenever he summons monsters to his position while he is not visible to the hero (who must have 40 insight to see him)—if the Hmnyw-Pharaoh is visible, he instead has a 18 chance of creating a daughter of Naunet whenever he summons monsters to his position. Daughters of Naunet generated this way are not treated as summoned or temporary and ignore extinction.

If the hero has sufficient insight, daughters of Naunet may be generated with the psurlon template.

Daughters of Naunet do not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Daughters of Naunet have massive HP pools due to their size and the ability to inflict severe damage even against poison-resistant heroes, making for an unwelcome surprise if a spellcasting monster of much lower level casts summon nasties and calls one in.

History

The daughter of Naunet is introduced in dNetHack 3.21.4.

Origin

In ancient Egyptian religion, Naunet or Nunut (Ancient Egyptian: nnwt) is the consort or female aspect of Nu (Ancient Egyptian: nnw Nānaw; Coptic: Ⲛⲟⲩⲛ Noun; "Watery One"), who is also known as Nun ("The Inert One"). Nu and Nunut (or Nun and Naunet) are the personifications of the primordial watery abyss which existed at the time of creation and from which the creator sun god Ra arose. Both Nu and Nunut are among the eight deities of the Ogdoad that represent the primordial Chaos from which the primordial mound of ancient Egypt arose—they can be seen as the creators of reality and personifications of the cosmos, as well as the ones that will destroy existence and return everything to whence it came.

Nu's male aspect was depicted as a frog, a frog-headed man, or a bearded man with blue-green skin, while Naunet is represented as a snake or snake-headed woman—this is why the daughters of Naunet in dNetHack and its derivatives are classified as snakes.
