A gentleman's suit is a type of body armor that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is medium-sized armor that has a base material of cloth, and appears as expensive clothes made of "silk" when unidentified.
Generation
Noblemen that are not drow or elves start each game with a +2 gentleman's suit—elven Noblemen receive an elven toga of the same enchantment instead, while drow Noblemen are given a consort's suit of the same enchantment. Vampiric Binders start with a burnt +0 gentleman's suit, while vampiric men that are Undead Hunters start each game with a +1 gentleman's suit in place of the role's standard jacket.
Gentleman's suits are not randomly generated normally, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Spa shops in Elshava can stock gentleman's suits.
Gentleman's suits can be generated within dilapidated armories at varying levels of erosion.
A +2 gentleman's suit is generated on the Convict quest goal level, where it is placed in the box on the southeastern-most square during level creation.
Several monsters can be generated with a gentleman's suit:
- Imps generated in Gehennom have a 1⁄2 chance of generating with a gentleman's suit.
- Lady Constance is always generated with a +3 gentleman's suit.
- Lord Carnarvon is always generated with a blessed +5 gentleman's suit.
- Parasitized androids generated on the Android quest have a 1⁄5 chance of being generated with a gentleman's suit.
- Carcosan courtiers generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut and Android quests) have an effective 1⁄8 chance of being generated with a gentleman's suit. Carcosan courtiers generated elsewhere have an effective 1⁄4 chance of being generated with a gentleman's suit.
- Vampire men generated in the future are always created with a gentleman's suit that has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +7.
- Vampire lords generated outside of the future have a 3⁄4 chance of being created with a gentleman's suit.
- Male fallen angels that are generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have a 1⁄6 chance of being generated with a gentleman's suit made of cloth.
- Male enormous rats have a 1⁄100 chance of being generated with a gentleman's suit.
- Dispater, Levistus and Mephistopheles are always generated with gentleman's suits.
- Asmodeus is always generated with a black gentleman's suit.
- Madmen player monsters generated on the Astral Plane are created with a gentleman's suit.
- Noblemen player monsters generated outside of the Astral Plane are created with a gentleman's suit.
For Madmen that are humans, vampires, incantifiers, gnomes, drow, or elves, a +2 gentleman's suit can be found among their belongings within the box on the Madperson quest's true home level—an elven Madman's suit will be colored either gray or brown with equal probability.
