A mummy wrapping is a type of cloak that appears in NetHack. It is made of cloth.

Generation

Mummy wrappings are not generated randomly, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Mummies have a 67 chance of being generated with a mummy wrapping.[1]

Any hero that is killed by a mummy and leaves a bones file will arise as a named mummy wearing any mummy wrapping they were carrying, and will be given a mummy wrapping to wear if they were not already carrying one.[2]

Description

While worn, the mummy wrapping provides no base AC and MC1, and also negates invisibility: heroes and monsters that are invisible and wear a mummy wrapping will become visible for as long as it is worn. Additionally, wearing a mummy wrapping prevents the effects of some items from turning the wearer invisible.

A user has suggested improving this page or section as follows:

"Cross-reference sources of invisibility to verify which. In particular: this applies for the wand but NOT the potion, and the spell needs studying as well."

Per commit 84fabf76 and commit 11aaa702, large humanoids are able to wear mummy wrappings as their only choice of cloak. They will not do so if they are invisible and were not created already wearing the wrapping and putting the wrapping on would render them visible to a hero that cannot see invisible.

Strategy

The mummy wrapping is the least effective cloak in terms of AC, but it is also the lightest of all cloaks and is more than sufficient to cover body armor, including protecting it from erosion. It also does not have any base AC of its own to lose to erosion—heroes that lack a cloak may find a significantly-enchanted mummy wrapping to be a tempting option.

Heroes that elect for permanent invisibility will often keep a mummy wrapping or two on hand for various purposes:

  • Shopkeepers will not allow invisible characters to walk into their shops. A mummy wrapping can be quickly thrown on to get inside, and can optionally be removed after—leaving the store will require the character to put it back on, unless they exit through other means.
  • Trapping an aligned priest in their temple in order to convert the altar requires that the priest be able to see the hero.
  • Wraiths cannot see invisible, making it vital for characters planning to lure them off graveyard levels to wear a mummy wrapping. The wrapping itself is poor protection against wraiths, and is best replaced with the hero's usual cloak before fighting them.

A mummy wrapping gives large humanoid pets an additional source of MC outside of the cornuthaum, as does the amulet of guarding added via commit 4d52332d.

Per commit 200cc21f, priests gain the ability to break boulders that block their movement path, preventing them from being reliably trapped using scrolls of earth.

History

The mummy wrapping is introduced alongside mummies in NetHack 3.0.0.

The generation and wearing of a mummy wrapping for mummies that arise in the bones of a dead hero is added in NetHack 3.6.0 via commit 4151ab50.

Origin

The wrapping commonly associated with mummies in Ancient Egypt and other civilizations is used as part of the embalming and preservation process for burying the deceased. Though the popular image of the mummy frequently features them wearing wrappings, not all cultures that practiced mummification used wrappings, and mummies were often created through other means, including environmental ones (such as bog bodies).

For Ancient Egyptians in particular, careful dehydration was performed to ensure that the body was completely dried out without being too stiff, then washed and wrapped in many layers of linen cloth. These linen bandages were covered with a gum that acts as a waterproofing agent and an antimicrobial agent - Egyptian priests placed small amulets within them to guard the deceased from evil in the afterlife. Once the mummy was completely wrapped, it was coated in resin in order to keep the threat of moist air away. Osiris was one of the first deities in Ancient Egypt to be associated with the mummy wrapping: When his brother Set cut him up into pieces after killing him, Osiris' wife, Isis, and her sister Nephthys searched all over Egypt to find each part of him. She collected all but one and then wrapped his body up, enabling him to return to life.

The encyclopedia entry is an excerpt from 1897 science fiction novel The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells, where the titular main character wraps bandages around himself to overcome his invisibility. This is also the basis for the mummy wrapping's ability to negate certain sources of invisibility, rendering an invisible wearer visible.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, mummy wrappings cannot be generated as invisible items and cannot be made invisible.

NetHack brass

In NetHack brass, cutting up a mummy wrapping with scissors only produces a single bandage.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, many mummies that do not have a special form of wrapping associated with them will always generate with a mummy wrapping.

A prayer-warded wrapping is a similar item to a mummy wrapping, and has an identical ability to suppress invisibility while worn.

The mummy wrapping is the base item for The Spell-warded Wrappings of Nitocris.

A mummy wrapping is the only cloak that a hero can wear to disguise the effects of having the spirit Orthos bound. Conversely, attempting to wear a mummy wrapping (or prayer-warded wrapping) while Shiro is bound will interrupt the attempt and unbind Shiro, destroying the wrapping in the process unless it is an artifact.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, tortle heroes are capable of wearing mummy wrappings, giving them access to one more armor slot besides gloves, shields, and helms.

Encyclopedia entry

He held a white cloth -- it was a serviette he had brought with him -- over the lower part of his face, so that his mouth and jaws were completely hidden, and that was the reason for his muffled voice. But it was not that which startled Mrs. Hall. It was the fact that all his forehead above his blue glasses was covered by a white bandage, and that another covered his ears, leaving not a scrap of his face exposed excepting only his pink, peaked nose. It was bright, pink, and shiny just as it had been at first. He wore a dark-brown velvet jacket with a high, black, linen-lined collar turned up about his neck. The thick black hair, escaping as it could below and between the cross bandages, project in curious tails and horns, giving him the strangest appearance conceivable.
