Shiro

Shiro, the stone soldier, known as Dunstan in the initial revisions of the Binder patch, is a spirit that appears in dNetHack and notdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Shiro's seal must be drawn in a ring of 8 rocks, arranged in a 3x3 'box'.

To remain bound to Shiro, a character must not wear a mummy wrapping.

Mark

A character that has Shiro bound becomes invisible. Unlike most binding marks, this does not have any negative effects outside of the usual drawbacks of invisibility: shopkeepers will not allow invisible characters to walk into their shop, but will not ban them and still allow shopping as normal if the character teleports inside.

Benefits

While Shiro is bound, he grants skill in polearms.

Shiro's active powers are as follows:

  • Earth Swallow: Create a pit in target adjacent square, then throw a boulder into the pit.

His active powers are as follows:

  • Stone Choir: Monsters that a characters attacks in melee are also struck by a volley of 1d8 rocks from random directions. Each rock deals 1d6 blunt damage and uses the sling skill.
  • As a stone: The character has stealth.

Strategy

The Earth Swallow active power can be used to cheat at Sokoban.

As a monster

In notdNetHack, Shiro, @, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is a strong human that can see invisible, will seek out magical items and other objects to collect, and can follow the character to other levels if he is adjacent.

Shrio has two weapon attacks and the ability to launch rocks at targets, and possesses stoning resistance.

Like many summoned spirits, Shiro cannot be tamed.

Generation

Shiro is first generated when summoned from his seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. He is always created hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Shiro is generated with a set of uncursed mineral equipment: a spear, a pair of gloves, armored boots, chain mail, and the Stone Mask, an artifact mask of Shiro that confers stoning resistance, stealth and invisibility while worn.

Shiro does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

Shiro's good natural AC combined with his stone armor makes him very hard to hit, and he will retaliate by throwing rocks as a bonus attack, though he is still vulnerable to brain eating attacks, but they will rarely land due to his high AC. Though this makes fighting Shiro annoying, he is thankfully not too dangerous.

If Shiro is killed after being summoned, he can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Shiro is generated along with many other spirits of the near void on the first floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes him nonliving.

Encyclopedia entry

"I'm shocked. You're the first person who's ever spoken to me. I've been here for many years, waving my arms around and asking for help, but everyone ignores me and passes me by. It's 'cause I'm about as impressive as a stone, right? ...I'm used to it, though."
