Cerberus, d, is a unique monster that appears in EvilHack. Both he and Charon are fully implemented and improved from vanilla NetHack.

Cerberus is a huge hell hound-like canine that guards the stair to Gehennom in the Valley of the Dead, and must be defeated in order to gain access to the stair and enter the branch. He is strong, thick-skinned, can see invisible, and can be seen via infravision; he is also accurate, can forcibly move past monsters, and can go berserk when at low HP.

Cerberus has three bite attacks and the ability to breathe fire, and possesses fire resistance, poison resistance, stoning resistance and a vulnerability to cold. He also possesses teleport control, and has a special immunity to beheading attacks such as those from Vorpal Blade: removing any one of his heads will cause him to regrow it instantly. Cerberus is also sleep resistant with one exception: a magic flute can lull the beast to sleep for a short amount of time.

Eating Cerberus's corpse or tin grants roughly +215 (13%) partial fire resistance, and has a 110 chance of conveying teleport control.

Generation

Cerberus is always generated hostile, and is not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Cerberus is generated meditating within the stairwell area of the Valley of the Dead, sitting two squares to the right of the stair.

Encyclopedia entry

Cerberus, (or Kerberos in Greek), was the three-headed dog
that guarded the Gates of Hell. He allowed any dead to enter,
and likewise prevented them all from ever leaving. He was
bested only twice: once when Orpheus put him to sleep by
playing bewitching music on his lyre, and the other time when
Hercules confronted him and took him to the world of the
living (as his twelfth and last labor).
