Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 - March 15, 1937), was the original creator of the Cthulhu mythos. Other authors have also contributed. Several NetHack variants contain monsters derived from the Cthulhu mythos (although vanilla NetHack doesn't.)
