Neferet the Green, @, is the Wizard quest leader. She is a strong, omnivorous human that can be seen via infravision.

Neferet the Green has a weapon attack and will attempt to cast one mage monster spell during each of her turns - the attack uses 8-sided dice rather than the 6-sided one used with most spellcasting attacks, making spells such as psi bolt much stronger when cast by her (12d8 versus 11d6 for a mage caster of the same level).

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Per commit 20cbadcf, killing quest leaders no longer makes the game unwinnable, and Neferet the Green and other quest leaders are given stat buffs and additional equipment to compensate. Neferet the Green's speed becomes 15, her MR score becomes 90, and she has a 4d10 weapon attack and will attempt to cast two 2d8 mage monster spells during each of her turns.

Generation

Neferet the Green is always generated within the Lonely Tower, the Wizard quest's home level, and occupies a throne at the back of the largest room inside the actual 'tower' building.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

As part of commit 20cbadcf, Neferet the Green always generates with a +5 quarterstaff and a +5 elven cloak.

History

Neferet the Green first appears in NetHack 3.4.0, where she replaces the Wizard of Balance as the quest leader - this was done to ensure thematic consistency with the Wizard role, which allows chaotic characters as of NetHack 3.3.0; the alignment of your character's quest leader alignment is adjusted to match their starting alignment.

Origin

Neferet the Green may be a reference to Nefertiti, an Egyptian queen of the 18th dynasty, or to Nofret (also sometimes called Neferet or Nefert), an Egyptian princess from the 4th dynasty; 'Nfr-t' is a transliteration of the hieroglyphs meaning "beautiful woman". Given that the Wizard role uses a Pantheon of Egyptian gods, a reference to Ancient Egypt seems likely.

Variants

Some variants make Neferet the Green and other quest leaders stronger to accommodate changes to the Quest and its entry mechanics, and these changes may be incorporated into upcoming versions of NetHack or else be borrowed from them.

SporkHack

In SporkHack, Neferet the Green's difficulty is increased to 24. Her speed becomes 15, her MR score becomes 90, and she will attempt to cast two 2d8 mage monster spells during each of her turns. She also gains flight, sleep resistance, poison resistance, and stoning resistance.

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, Neferet the Green's difficulty is increased to 24, and she gains a passive 0d4 magic missile attack and intrinsic magic resistance. Of her 10 points of AC, 2 are in from dodging and the rest are from protection.

xNetHack

In xNetHack, Neferet the Green's difficulty is increased to 25. She has a 4d10 weapon attack and will attempt to cast two 2d8 mage monster spells during each of her turns.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, Neferet the Green's stats are improved as in xNetHack, excluding difficulty.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, Neferet the Green's stats and resistances are improved as in xNetHack, excluding difficulty.

Neferet the Green always generates with a +5 quarterstaff and a +5 elven cloak. If The Eye of the Aethiopica is successfully wished for by a non-Wizard, there is a xx+1 chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of a hostile Neferet the Green generating adjacent to the character with the artifact in her possession.

All of the above information also applies to Hack'EM.
